Before Sunrise: The story that built us

by Sunrise Logistics | Jun 8, 2026 | Reflections

There is a story I return to often when people ask me what Sunrise Logistics stands for.

WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

I had just joined the family business, working with my father and sister after having left the corporate world. I arrived at the yard early and noticed one of our truck tractors was missing from its bay. My stomach dropped. I called my dad — our founder — convinced it had been stolen overnight. He answered calmly. He was in the truck. He had driven out in the early hours to swap it with a vehicle that had broken down en route, so the load could still make it to Durban on time. No drama. No waiting for someone else to sort it out. Just a man who understood that a client’s factory needed that freight that morning — and that it was his job to make sure it got there.

That moment has never left me. It is the DNA of everything we do at Sunrise Logistics.

My father started the business in 1993. He identified an opportunity: there was a need for a reliable overnight road freight service between Johannesburg and Durban for time-critical freight. The model was simple but demanding — collect in the afternoon, have it at the client’s factory door by 7am, on the line by 8:30. No exceptions. I was a varsity student at the time, helping him with the accounts on weekends, watching the business take shape long before I formally joined in 2004. And what struck me most, even then, was not the logistics. It was the relationships. My dad was building trust, one delivery at a time. Some of those first clients are still with us today — more than 32 years later.

His philosophy was straightforward: you do not let your clients down. Ever. We understood that everything we moved was critical to someone’s business — a factory waiting on raw materials, a retailer waiting on stock, a deadline that could not move. Our job was to carry that weight completely, and without complaint, so that our clients could get on with running their operations without worrying about that part of the chain. That is still how we operate today.

The hardest lesson I have had to learn since taking on the leadership of this business is humility. When you carry responsibility for the people who work with you and the clients who depend on you, it changes how you think and how you lead. You stop asking ‘what do I want?’ and start asking ‘what does this require of me?’ That culture does not live in a policy document. It lives in a team that shows up on consistently, handles the pressure without fuss, and understands that what we move is never just freight — it is someone’s production line, someone’s deadline, someone’s business.

My dad modelled that long before I had words for it. We carry his example with us every single day — as a reminder of what this business stands for, and what we owe the people who trust us with it.
This is the first in a series of pieces I will be sharing about Sunrise Logistics — our journey, our industry, and the conversations that matter. I hope you find value in it.

If you would like to connect, or if you are looking for a logistics partner who will treat your freight with the same care that my father drove out in the dark to protect, I would love to hear from you.

Sincerely
